The Arlington Family Tree

What do you get when you mix a couple Arlington-based artists and a truck? The Arlington Arts Truck! I was happy to be asked to commissioned by Arlington Arts to illustrate a family tree template for this local arts experience by Arlington native calligraphy artist Felecia Brice McFail. This felt like a great mix of illustration and infographic design, and it was super fun! Two family tree templates were commissioned — one by me, and the other by local woodcut artist Melanie Kehoss.

I created my illustration with a Virginia theme, featuring our state tree and flower (Dogwood), state bird (Cardinal), state insect (Tiger Swallowtail), and the iconic Blue Ridge mountains. I drew it by hand with pencil and paper, inked and refined in Concepts, then colored and produced in Clip Studio Paint.

The best parts were seeing my illustration elevated by Felecia Brice McFail’s artistic lettering and all the people who used it to create a family keepsake! And of course working with Arlington County’s dedicated and tireless Arts Truck team.
